Lumière Gig Guide—June 2007
BRANNAVAN GNANALINGAM trawls the music calendar to bring us the month’s best gigs. This June: The Sneaks and The Whipping Cats (plus Disasteradio), Age Pryor, Guns N Roses, The Taliband, Gridlock.
» The Sneaks and The Whipping Cats (plus Disasteradio), June 16 @ The Kings Arms
I like the Sneaks. They’re funny. And they’re also releasing an album on the 11th, and play a small nationwide tour with those crazy bluesters The Whipping Cats. Also included is a stopover on the June 15 in Hamilton’s Ward Lane.
» Age Pryor, June 21 @ Schooner Tavern
Wellington folkie Age Pryor plays a couple of dates in Auckland, promoting his rather lovely Shank’s Pony. It’ll be a nice charming wee gig no doubt.
» Guns N Roses, June 29 @ Vector Arena
I don’t know if this gig deserves to be mentioned - it’s not GNR without Slash (and the rest of the band) - but if a Guns N Roses covers-band wants to come to New Zealand and have Axl Rose there, then it can’t be terrible. Right? Right?
» The Taliband, June 29 @ The Kings Arms
A nationwide tour through the ski-towns (though a lack of snow may prove problematic) followed by the bigger centres awaits this wickedly funny ska-ry, funk-y, rock-y group. Also, they possess one of the best names in New Zealand music.
» Gridlock, June 29 @ San Francisco Bathhouse
These San Francisco industrial/drum and bass duo have been making some noise for over a decade, with their Autreche influenced sound gaining a cult following over in the States. Their complex soundscapes will certainly be worth checking out.
Upcoming Gigs To Consider: Dinosaur Jr. (Akld only), Bob Dylan (Akld, Wgtn, Chch), Black Sabbath (the Dio Years – Akld), Jose Gonzalez (Akld only), The Shins (Chch and Akld only).
