Lumière Gig Guide—February 2009
BRANNAVAN GNANALINGAM trawls the local music calendar to bring us the month’s best gigs. This February: El Guincho w/ The Ruby Suns & Pikelet, Dan Deacon & High Places, Jolie Holland, Of Montreal.
» El Guincho w/ The Ruby Suns & Pikelet (Aus), Thur Feb 12 @ Cassette #9 (Akld); Fri Feb 13 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn); Sat Feb 14 @ Kreation (Chch)
Spanish DJ Pablo Diaz-Reixa AKA El Guincho released my favourite album of 2008 (though technically released in 2007) with Alegranza!. His music covers everything from tropicalia to Cuban doo-wop, and comparisons with the likes of The Animal Collective barely touch on how great he sounds.
» Dan Deacon & High Places, Thurs Feb 19 @ Bodega (Wgtn); Fri Feb 20 @ Cassette #9 (Akld); Sat Feb 21 @ Marsupial (Chch)
Baltimore icon Dan Deacon has played everything from grindcore to sine wave manipulation, but his unique instrumentals and collages have garnered considerable critical praise. His live shows are regarded as brilliant too. High Places, the Brooklyn, Thrill Jockey signees, electronic whizzes have also been gathering considerable critical praise. The gig is a bargain for $25. Nebraskan Darren Keen (The Show is the Rainbow) has also been added to the bulging bill.
» Jolie Holland, Mon Feb 23 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn); Tues Feb 24 @ Galatos (Akld)
Texan singer-songwriter Jolie Holland is returning after her sell-out 2005 tour to the country. Possessing a gorgeous voice and stunning tunes, and playing this time with a four-piece band, this is yet another wonderful gig in another great summer of gigs.
» Of Montreal, Wed Feb 25 @ Kings Arms (Akld); Thur Feb 26 @ San Francisco Bathhouse (Wgtn)
One of the best American indie bands around at the mo, armed with an incredible theatrical live show full of glam over-the-topness and killer tunes. Part of the Elephant 6 second wave, their career has jumped from power pop, vaudeville tunes to schizophrenic dance music. Highly recommended. The Auckland show features Little Pictures and the Ruby Suns, while the Wellington show features So So Modern.
Upcoming Gigs: WOMAD, Jim White/John Doe, The Kills.
