Media Release
A major highlight of the New Zealand filmgoers’ calendar, the Cathay Pacific Italian Film Festival opens in Auckland on October 5th. The festival, which celebrates the best and latest contemporary Italian film on offer, is the largest single-culture film festival and the largest Italian cultural event in New Zealand. This year, in celebration of the festival’s 10th anniversary, a record number of feature films will be screened.

Twenty Italian films, all of which have been released within the last two years, have been selected. A number of short films will also be screened during this year’s festival, which will now screen for two consecutive weeks in each of the seven locations where it is being held. In previous years the festival screened for a single week in Dunedin, Nelson, Napier and Hamilton.

Lecture Series
This year also sees the return of the inaugural Italian Film festival Lecture Series.
A great success last year, the series aims to further stimulate interest in Italian film. This year's lecture introduces Davide Ferrario's technically innovative film After midnight (Dopo mezzanotte) and examines the homage it pays to Italian cinema, its celebration of the Mole Antonelliana, the architectural wonder housing the new National Museum of Cinema, and its representation of Turin, location of many of this year's festival films and emerging rival to Rome as the centre of the Italian film industry.

A lecture of 45 minutes presented prior to a screening of ‘After midnight (Dopo Mezzanotte)’.

The lecture is presented by Dr Bernadette Luciano, Head of Italian studies, Auckland University. Dr Luciano joined Auckland University in 1994 after having taught at University of California, Santa Barbara; Columbia University and Stanford University, amongst others.

Her areas of research and publication include: Italian film studies; theory and practice of film adaptation; theory and practice of translation; issues of identity and migration in contemporary Italian literature and film.

Dr Luciano is currently working on a book on Italian filmmaker Silvio Soldini and has recently returned from a 6 month sabbatical in Italy, where she carried out further research on the book and other Italian language and film related topics.

Dates and locations of the 2005 lecture are:
» Thursday 6th October | Bridgeway Cinema, Northcote Point
» Friday 7th October | Rialto@Broadway, Newmarket
» Thursday 20th October | The Paramount, Wellington.

Scholarship
The festival is proud to launch the Italian Film festival Scholarship as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations. The recipient will embark on an experience-laden trip to Italy. Open to all New Zealand filmmakers who have aesthetic, technical and/or cultural perspectives to share with the Italian film community, the scholarship aims to foster a closer working relationship between the Italian and New Zealand film industries and communities.

Cathay Pacific, one of the major contributors to the scholarship, will provide the scholarship recipient with return airfares to Italy. An additional sponsor will be announced at a later date. The NZ Film Commission is providing support and assistance with the promotion and administration of the scholarship. For further details of the scholarship please refer to the separate release [here].

Sponsorship
Ian Herald, Marketing Services Manager for Cathay Pacific in New Zealand, said Cathay Pacific was proud to have sponsored the Italian Film Festival since 2000 as it emphasised the airline’s close ties with the close knit Italian community in New Zealand. Cathay Pacific flies five times a week from New Zealand to Rome, with only a brief stopover in Hong Kong. The airline provides the opportunity for the festival director, Tony Lambert, to visit Europe twice a year, to negotiate the inclusion of the very best Italian films in the New Zealand festival.

The festival also wishes to thank the Embassy of Italy in New Zealand, Ambassadore Marolla, and the Italian Ministry of External Affairs for their support of the festival.
