Scenes from Aro Valley: a mini-retrospective of the Aro Valley film movement
Three features and several shorts from the so-called Aro Valley Film movement – a movement that existed much more in the eyes of outsiders than in the minds of an often fiercely independent-minded bunch of friends making the films – screen as part of a timely mini-retrospective at the Paramount theatre this coming week (April 20-23). Featuring a common interest in the textures of human interaction, the films range vastly from the choppy and enigmatic black comedy of Shifter, to the stern but sometimes amused gaze of Murmurs, to the devastatingly painful world of Little Bits of Light (see our review here). The retrospective also appropriately coincides with the impending departure of Aro Street stalwart Campbell Walker and partner Grace C. Russell (director and co-writer of Little Bits of Light respectively), who relocate to the sprawl of Auckland City. Their farewell party is on Saturday April 22nd, from 10pm (at the Paramount). Session times for films are TBC; check paramount.co.nz for updates.
