2015 Summer Writing Residency

ARTS, Visual Arts
The Lumière Reader is excited to be collaborating with Dunedin’s Blue Oyster Art Project Space on a new Summer Writing Residency focused on critical writing practice.

Blue Oyster Art Project Space is pleased to announce an open call for applications to complete a six-week writing residency beginning in January 2015. Presented in association with The Lumière Reader, the residency will be open to all New Zealand emerging and graduate writers with an interest in critical writing on contemporary art.

The successful applicant will be offered a residency space at the Blue Oyster for six weeks, organisation of accommodation for the duration of the residency in Dunedin, and their finished piece will be published online The Lumière Reader’s editors and in print. The successful applicant will also be offered mentorship and peer review by The Lumière Reader, as well as residency hosting and provisions by the Blue Oyster.

Motivated to support and promoted diverse perspectives and healthy debate around arts culture in New Zealand, this inaugural residency has been designed by the Blue Oyster and The Lumière Reader to foster creative and critically engaged writing practices around contemporary art. The residency offers an opportunity for one successful applicant to spend a set amount of time to develop and complete an extended text within their field, in a space away from their usual schedule, bringing contemplation, experience, discussion, mentorship, peer review, and project completion into the foreground.

The finished text may take the form of an essay, keynote text or body of smaller texts motivated this central question: Is criticism still relevant?

We are currently fundraising to offer the resident a stipend. Visit our Givealittle Cause to donate, all contributions big or small will go directly to the successful applicant.

About the Residency

Like most project spaces around the country, from the Christmas break through to the end of January, the Blue Oyster is mostly closed to coincide with surrounding business holidays. During this time we are able to offer the empty gallery space and accompanying gallery resources as a one month studio residency to an artist or group of artists. The Summer Residency was re-started in 2012, and has since enjoyed three years hosting artists on project and research based endeavours, which have resulted in a Blue Oyster exhibition or project during the following programme.

Summer residents are encouraged to use the space as a space for developing research, writing and making. The residency is offered as a space for contemplation, experience, discussion and consideration, giving the artist more time to consider their evolving practice.
